Today, Nokia announced that it is working on a touch-screen user interface for its S60 interface on the Symbian OS, at the Symbian Smartphone show in London. Details are slim at this point, and it appears that Nokia hasn't even made its mind up on whether the interface will support a full-qwerty keyboard, an on-screen keyboard, or both. As an iPhone owner myself, I sometimes yearn for the option to use a real keyboard, and it's one of the features I miss from my Blackjack. Nokia may attempt to solve this problem by providing some form of "tactical feedback" through the touch screen itself by providing a "pulse," which I take to mean a "buzz" of some sort like a force feedback controller. Nokia also plans to release a UI Accelerator toolkit for manufacturers, which allows them to develop their own graphical effects. I think this could go both ways—it will allow some to add bonus features, but may also offer others too much control, sort of like the way Verizon has its own menu on many phones. The latest Symbian OS technologies will be available on S60 devices sometime during 2008, although Nokia didn't specifically say when. Since Samsung was at the same London event today, I wouldn't be surprised to see S60 devices from it sporting touch-screen features in the next year, either. The second story is that the Nokia N810 tablet could be announced within the next week. Tabletblog.com noticed a press release which accidentally leaked the following information: at a "party co-sponsored by Island Def Jam Music Group, mSpot, and Nokia, will showcase IDJ Radio, along with Nokia's mobile social-network type service MOSH and the new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet." According to the same release, the party is scheduled for October 23rd. Ars has reported on the possibility that the N800's successor will have both WiMax and GPS capabilities, although it was originally expected early next year. MOSH, if you're unfamiliar, will allow you to share and upload photos, audio, games, and other apps with other mobile users. It was announced in September.
