::: TRIDENT FREIGHT LLC ::: THURAYA SEES PROSPECTS BRIGHTENING Costs Incurred in 2000 put at $93m Capital and operational costs incurred by Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. (Thuraya) in 2000 was $193 million, but 2001 is expected to be a better year financially for the company, a top official said. The costs went largely for the construction and launch phases as well as launch-related insurance of Thuraya's mobile satellite system. It has also covered some support services and an extensive marketing and promotional programme. Significantly, Thuraya is also expanding its service portfolio with the provision of high-speed data services from mid-2002. "Furthermore, we are developing more service options based on the global positioning system (GPS) feature offered by our systems. These options will include fleet tracking management and many informational and direction-related features," said Thuraya Chairman Mohammed Omran. The company meanwhile, has set up its second uplink beacon station (UBS) in Almaadi, Egypt, in an agreement with Telecom, Egypt. "The installation, testing and commissioning of the remote UBS in the Cairo Earth Station, based in Almaadi has already been completed," he said. Thuraya's first UBS is located in the primary gateway station in Sharjah. The satellite coverage area is created by a combination of its 40-foot by 50-foot ellipse antenna and state of art onboard, digital signal processing capabilities. Thuraya's satellite pointing technology adopts the big boom, L-brand antenna. For the L-brand antenna to be capable of sensing the earth and more specifically to see the service area center, a reference on earth is required to emit a signal working in the same frequency as the L-brand antenna. In another development, Thuraya's geo-mobile radio interface (GMR) has been adopted as the industry standard. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has released its first complete setoff specifications for the mobile satellite radio interface, known as GMR. "Thuraya is pleased to have been part of the ETSI initiative, collaborating on a technology that was developed for us and will now be adopted as a standard for the mobile satellite industry. The publication of GMR-1 by ETSI is an important step forward that will regularize the industry, encouraging growth, innovation and competition," Omran said. Rais Hassan Saadi Firms bag contract Two Rais Hassan Saadi Group companies have won a contract from Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. to provide logistics and distribution support from the UAE to 99 countries stretching from Europe and Africa to the Subcontinent and CIS. "Beginning June 15, we expect to take delivery at Dubai Airport of 250,000 handsets being airfreighted from Mexico and Switzerland (mobiles being manufactured by the Hughes Network Systems) and airship the same through the 99 destination coverage area as per instructions from Thuraya," Salim Rais, director, explained yesterday. The companies have further contracted to transport 400,000 Thuraya mobile handsets next year, as part of the two-year, renewable storage and shipment contract. The Group plans to use its 500,000 square foot Jebel Ali base that incorporates a 250,000 square foot sophisticated warehousing facility for the purpose. The facility incorporating extensive IT technology will be a Net-driven operation complete with inventory tracking and allied capabilities. He added that the group's international freight forwarding division, Trident Freight, will provide the receipt and outbound freight management, while RHS Logistics will manage the related distribution hub activities. Stock inventory in the Jebel Ali base is expected to total Dh 513.8 million ($140 million), he said. Mr Madhav Kurup, Freight Forwarding Manager, Trident said test runs had already been carried out in April, comprising a 500-kilo shipment to Khartoum. "We expect monthly airfreight volumes to average 100 tonnes," he added. The initial consignment of 250,000 handsets will be airfreighted to 30 countries over four months this year, to destinations in Europe, including Italy and the UK to several locations in Africa and the Middle East and to India, Dhaka and Bhutan, he said. Rais explained that the Thuraya contract did not entail any fresh investments on the part of the group, which is geared towards providing such tailormade logistics solutions. "We expect this branch of our business to win more & more orders in the near term; several are in tender at the moment," he said.
